ABSTRACT

Background
Buttock augmentation utilizing fat graft, often referred to as the Brazilian butt lift (BBL), is an increasingly popular aesthetic surgical procedure globally. It is widely performed in the western world and is gradually gaining popularity in Africa as well.

The procedure aims to improve buttock contour, size, shape, and its relation with adjacent anatomical regions while preserving or improving skin appearance. The use of autologous fat grafting, as opposed to implants, is considered the gold standard for gluteal augmentation. Some Asian studies report satisfaction rates of up to 97.1 percent. While a few satisfaction studies have been conducted in the west and in China, none have specifically referenced an African population.

Objective
To determine short term satisfaction over a six month period among patients receiving gluteal enhancement surgery using autologous fat grafting for the first time.

Design
This was a multicenter prospective cohort Patient Reported Outcome (PRO) study conducted in Kenya.

Setting
The study was carried out in four private medical facilities located within Nairobi, Kenya.

Subjects
A total of 47 eligible participants were recruited during consultative clinic visits over a seven month period. The majority of participants were women requesting buttock enhancement surgery for the first time. Subjects who met the selection criteria were followed up for six months.

Assessment of satisfaction with the surgical outcome of the buttocks was performed using the BODY-Q™ for buttocks and a five part Likert scale.

Results
Data was analyzed using SPSS version 25 and descriptive statistics. Pie charts were used for visualization, and Chi square tests were applied to compare satisfaction levels, with a level of significance set at p < 0.05.

Out of the 47 subjects recruited, 41 responses were obtained. The mean age was 32.6 ± 6.4 years, and the mean body mass index (BMI) was 27.3 ± 3.1 kg/m². The majority of participants reported having an hourglass body shape.

Between 92.7 percent and 100 percent of participants reported being somewhat to very satisfied with their buttock appearance.

Conclusion
Autologous fat grafting for gluteal enhancement demonstrates high patient satisfaction in Kenya, with satisfaction levels reaching up to 92.7 percent.
